Cross-Curricular Learning Center Design 1. Author: Ron Reynolds 2. Title of Centers: silhouette, muscles 1, bones 1, organs, bones 2, muscles 2, definitions, self portrait. 3. Grade Level: 8th 4. Content Area: Art 5. Types of Centers: skill, exploratory 6. Organization of Centers: sequential, thematic 7. Number of Centers: 8 8. Time Needed: 10 class periods OBJECTIVES: The students will understand 3 systems of the human body and how they look, along with the concept of foreground, background, shape, and color. 1. They will learn 4 of the 600 muscles of the human body. 2. They will learn 5 of the 206 bones of the human body. 3. They will learn the functions of 5 organs of the human body. The students will create a “book” of the human body, made up of 5 plastic pages depicting different systems (muscles at the back of the body, skeleton, organs, ribs & skull, muscles at the front of the body) to give a 3D effect of viewing the inside of a human being. The inside cover will have a sheet that shows the functions of 10 major organs, and the outer cover will be a self portrait. The plastic pages will have the systems drawn on with black Sharpie marker, then painted on the back with acrylic paint. All of the systems need to line up and overlap precisely. MATERIALS: 12x18 white paper, pencil, acetate, black Sharpie marker (fine point), acrylic paints, fine brushes, colored pencils, human body systems templates
CENTER ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Center 1 (silhouette) The students will draw a silhouette on the back “cover” of their folded 12x18 white paper. They will choose any color (except for white) and solidly color the silhouette in. After the teacher approves of the craftsmanship, the students will move on to Center 2. Center 2 (muscles 1) The students will trace the muscles of the human body onto a sheet of acetate with a black Sharpie marker. At the bottom, they will write their first and last name. On the back, they will paint the muscles with red acrylic paint, staying inside the outer lines. After the teacher approves of the craftsmanship, the students will tape the painted sheet to the wall (painted side out), then move to Center 3. Center 3 (bones 1) The students will trace the skeleton of the human body onto a sheet of acetate with a black Sharpie marker (without the rib cage or the front of the skull). At the bottom, they will write their first and last name. On the back, they will paint the bones with white acrylic paint, staying inside the lines. After the teacher approves the craftsmanship, the students will tape the painted sheet to the wall (painted side out), then move to Center 4. Center 4 (organs) The students will trace the major organs of the human body onto a sheet of acetate with a black Sharpie marker. At the bottom, they will write their first and last name. On the back, they will paint the organs in the following manner, staying inside the lines: brain – gray*, trachea – yellow, heart – red*, spleen – green, stomach – pink*, small intestine – purple, large intestine – yellow, pancreas – blue, kidneys – red*, liver – brown*, lungs – pink* (* denotes actual color). After the teacher approves the craftsmanship, the students will tape the sheet to the wall (painted side out), then move to Center 5. Center 5 (bones 2) The students will trace the rib cage and front of the skull onto a sheet of acetate with a black Sharpie marker. At the bottom, they will write their first and last name. On the back, they will paint the bones white with acrylic paint, staying inside the lines. After the teacher approves the craftsmanship, the students will tape the sheet to the wall (painted side out), then move to Center 6. Center 6 (muscles 2) The students will trace the muscles on the front of the human body onto a sheet of acetate with a black Sharpie marker. At the bottom, they will write their first and last name. On the back, they will paint the muscles red with acrylic paint, staying inside the outer lines. After the teacher approves the craftsmanship, the students will tape the sheet to the wall (painted side out), then move to Center 7. Center 7 (definitions) The students will copy the definitions of the functions of the major organs of the human body neatly onto a worksheet. They will tape the sheet to the inside cover of their folded 12x18 white paper. When they are finished, they will move to Center 8. Center 8 (self portrait) The students will draw themselves on the front cover of their folded 12x18 white paper. The picture must accurately depict the individual student at this point in their life, and the color has to be added solidly and neatly with colored pencil. When the portrait is complete, the students will tape the tops of the acetate sheets into the packet, overlapping perfectly to give the desired 3D effect, then they will turn the project in.
ASSESSMENT: 1. The project will be graded based on the individual acetate pages, definition page, and self portrait drawing. Each page will be worth 100 points. 2. The students will take a brief quiz on the muscles, bones, and organs of the human body (see attached).
HANDOUTS/WORKSHEETS: Individual pages showing the muscles, bones, and organs of the human body, as well as a “how-to” worksheet showing the steps in drawing a full body self portrait.
